Monitor changes in species composition of grasshopper assemblages over the course of the summer on unburned areas and areas burned for the first time in 1, 2, or 4 years.
Location of Sampling Stations: All sites on upland (Florence & Dwight-Irwin) soils (1982)
Frequency of Sampling: 20 samples of 20 sweeps each (400 sweeps total) were taken at each of the 10 sites at approximately two week intervals from June 1- September 2, 1982.
Variable Measured: Date, location, time, wind, temperature, species
Methods: Sweeps were taken with standard canvas nets 38 cm in diameter by the same two individuals throughout the summer, each of whom took ten sets of 20 sweeps along parallel transects (5-10 m apart) 200 m long. Transects were flagged, enabling sweeps to be taken in the same local areas on each occasion. A sweep was taken at each step by traversing an arc of 180° with the net through the top layer of vegetation. After 20 such sweeps, the contents of the net were emptied into plastic bags. These samples were frozen until grasshoppers were removed and identified.
